Compton, Eliza & Alice

Elza Delane Compton was born November 26, 1870 near Pleasant Valley. His parents were William Robinson and Martha Jane Ballard Compton. William Robinson Compton was born in North Carolina, served in the Civil War, and is buried at Big A Cemetery in Rowlett, Tex. Grandparents of Elza Compton were Samuel and Keziah Kirby Compton.

Jennie Alice Williams Compton was born during 1873 at Giles County, Tennessee. Her parents were George Washington and Mary Lou Beaver Williams.

Elza and Alice took up farming after their marriage. Cotton was their main cash crop. Their daughter, Martha Compton Beaver, says that they lived just down the road from Langdon Cheeves McCallum. Martha Beaver is, without a doubt, the last remaining person that knew a member of the 1854 Wagon Train . She can still recall visiting her Uncle Andrew Barland Kirby who lived between Pleasant Valley and Rowlett.

"My grandmother, Mary Lou Beaver, married G. W. Williams and they lived in Tennessee. They had seven children before my grandfather died from a fever at the age of thirty-six. Grandmother Mary had all their belongings loaded into a covered wagon and her oldest son, John, drove the wagon all the way to Texas when he was only fifteen years old". Then Grandma Mary took the remaining children and boarded a locomotive steam engine bound for Fort Worth, Texas. A man approached her as they neared the Forth Worth depot and ask if he could have one of the small children. That man got a real good tongue lashing, but still managed to get off with one of the children while the baggage was being unloaded. The depot agent sent a telegram to the next train station and the little girl was returned to her mother the next day on a return train". Martha Compton Beaver.

Children of Elza and Alice Compton were Cora Ethel who married Jim Tomlin; Lemuel Barch killed in France during WW I; Elsie Dena who married Monroe Hutson; Giralda Vera who married Langdon McCallum; Martha Louise who married Dr Norman Beaver; Charles Ray; twin brother William Roy, and Glenn Oram Compton.

Alice died September 15, 1938 and Elza followed on June 30, 1951. Both are buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
