Herring, Elizabeth Newman
Elizabeth (Eliza) Newman Herring was born April 28, 1835 in Tennessee. Her parents were Thomas Newman, Jr and Mary Sparks Newman. Thomas was born during 1792 & Mary was born in Maryland during 1787. Thomas Newman and Mary Sparks were married at Tuscaloosa, Alabama on September 12, 1824. Their children were namely Susan Newman; Nell Newman; Harvey Newman; Harmon Runnels Newman; Elizabeth Newman; Sarah J. Newman, and Bird C. Newman. It was in 1856 that Eliza and Harmon Runnels traveled to Texas with their father, Thomas, shortly after their mother died. The trip from Wayne County, Missouri to Pleasant Valley, Texas was made in a wagon yoked with oxen. Eliza Newman married the well known Daniel Herring II of Sachse. Daniel was born March 4, 1812 in South Carolina. Daniel and his first wife, Mary Deck Herring were the parents of four healthy children when they arrived in the Sachse area, and six more were born by 1856. Daniel lost his mother in 1855, and then his wife in 1856. Daniel and Eliza were married in 1858 and settled on his farm between Murphy and Sachse. Eight children were born to this couple, making Daniel the father of nineteen in all. Their daughter, Susan Lurlene Herring, married DeWitt Clinton Sachse, the son of Sachse's founder, William Sachse. Daniel had already been issued his headright for 640 acres of free Texas land. Then, he received another land grant from Governor Pease. In the 1870's he donated land from the original land grant to the Hogge-Herring Cemetery. Daniel died October 20, 1882. He left his property to his older children and his wife, Eliza. After his death she married L. Dow Emberton. Eliza passed away at the age of 95 on January 28, 1925 in Wylie. Recorded as Elizabeth Herring, she is buried beside Daniel and a number of their descendants in the Hogge-Herring Cemetery. |
