Westbrook, Lucy Jim

Thirty Years As Dallas School Teacher

Westbrook, Lucy Jim Graveside services for Lucy Jim Westbrook of Dallas will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, June 26, 2010 in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper, TX. Rev.Gary Regan and Rev. Joe Ed Goolsby will officiate. Burial will follow under the direction of the Delta Funeral Home of Cooper. There will be no visitation.

Lucy Jim Westbrook was born in Paris, TX on September 7, 1934 and died in Dallas on June 23, 2010. She was 75 years old. She was the daughter of Rev. James and Lola Westbrook. Her father was a Methodist minister and she took great pride in being a preacher's kid.

Lucy graduated from SMU in 1956 with a degree in music education with a concentration in voice. She received her masters degree from SMU in 1974.

In 1956 she embarked on a 30 year career with the Dallas Independent School District as a music and creative arts teacher. Upon retiring from the district, she began her second career as a travel agent, eventually becoming a cruise specialist. She visited many foreign countries.

A personal goal was to visit all 50 states. Lucy accomplished this goal in October of 2001. Lucy wants to be remembered as a teacher, however "My career in teaching was to help others, the travel career was for myself."

In addition to her careers, Lucy was a very talented singer. She was a member of the Dallas Opera Chorus and a charter member of the Dallas Civic Chorus, which eventually became the Dallas Symphony Chorus. She was a soloist with many churches in Dallas and throughout North Texas. She was a member of Ridgewood Park United Methodist Church, SMU Alumni Association, the Mustang Club, National Retired Teachers Association, The Melodie Club, and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by beloved cousins and friends.
