Cherry, Mary J.

Former Resident of Garland
August 27, 1918

Mrs. Mary J. Cherry, a former resident of Garland, but for the last few years residing at Tioga, died at her home there, Tuesday, August 27, 1918, following a week's illness.

Mrs. Cherry was formerly Miss Mary Farmer, the town of Farmers Branch being named for her parents. She was born in Tennessee January 19, 1843, but came to Texas when she was only three or four years old.

She was married to T. G. Cherry in September, 1860, in Clarksville, Texas. They were the parents of seven children, five of whom are now living: Dr. G. P. Cherry of Mangum, Oklahoma, Dr. T. F. Cherry of Margaret, Texas, Mrs. T. E. Calloway of Clayton, N. M., R. P. Cherry of Tioga, and Mrs. Monroe Wilson of Garland. Mrs. Cherry is also survived by twenty-one of her twenty-five grandchildren. Her companion died many years ago.

Preliminary services were held in the Baptist church at Tioga Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock, and the funeral was held in the Baptist church at Garland Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, being conducted by her pastor, Rev. J. M. Simmons, assisted by Rev. J. Y. Fincher, pastor of the Garland Baptist Church. A large crowd of friends were present to honor the memory of this good and noble woman, who had lived a devoted Christian life since her conversion in girlhood. The body was laid to rest in the Mills Cemetery.

All the children were in Garland to attend the funeral, as well as Mr. T. E .Callahan of Clayton, New Mexico, Mrs. T. F. Cherry and son William of Margaret, Texas, Miss Mittie McDonald, and Rev. J. M. Simmons of Tioga.
