BIG A CEMETERY
Big A is the first known cemetery to have ever served the Rowlett area. Early pioneer families would travel from all the various surrounding communities to the Kirby meadow in order to bury their dead.

Some of the early pioneer graves were marked with Bois D'arc stobs. Most of these stakes have long since vanished. In many cases, all that remain of an entire pioneer family can be found in this historical cemetery. In some cases, cemetery headstones can be the only remaining physical evidence that a certain person ever existed.

What started out as a family burial ground had become a community cemetery by 1871, but wouldn't be known as Big A for at least another twenty years. It seems as if a school commonly called "Corn Stalk" by the local community members was built across the road from the cemetery back in those days and some kids painted a big "A" on the side of the building one Halloween night. The lettering stayed on the building and the school, cemetery, road and surrounding area eventually became known as Big A.

Early history of the Big A Cemetery reads like that of a master genealogist's handbook on descendants of Robert and Keziah McCoy Kirby.

1857
William G. Kirby, eldest child of Robert Kirby, died on October 26, 1857 and was buried in a meadow on his own land. He was born in Monroe County, Kentucky on August 25, 1812 and married native Kentuckian Lucinda H. Fitzgerald.

It was during the early fall of 1854 when William and Lucinda loaded up their six children and joined a small group of Kentucky settlers prepared for their overland journey to the Texas frontier. The wagon train then traveled from Monroe County Kentucky to the Rowlett area. The entire trip lasted forty five days. All eleven wagons arrived on November 1, 1854. It was later reported that all arrived safely and without hostile encounters.

1860
Two additional children were born to William and Lucinda after they settled near Rowlett. Their fourth child (born in Kentucky), Marquis P. W. Kirby, died on March 16, 1860. The ten year old lad was then buried along side his dad.

1861
The two week old infant daughter of William B. and Daranah Armstrong Nelson died the following year on December 19, 1861. William B. Nelson also traveled to the Rowlett area as a member of the 1854 wagon train. He married Daranah F. Armstrong of the Pleasant Valley community on February 8, 1861. Daranah was the daughter of William P. and Sarah Sheltman Armstrong.

1862
Anna Jane Kirby died the following year on March 30, 1862 at 45 years of age. The former Anna Jane Nelson had married John R. Kirby while still living in Monroe County, Kentucky. They were also members of the 1854 wagon train. John and Anna had seven children total with two dying as infants. Their children married into the Ballard, Toller, Hughes and Coomer families.

1862
Benjamine Coy Kirby was also a son of Robert and Keziah Kirby. He died on June 11, 1862 at 47 years of age. He had left Monroe County, Kentucky as a member of the 1854 wagon train and as a single man, but soon married the former Miss Elizabeth "Betsy" McDaniel soon after his arrival in the Rowlett area.

Betsy was the daughter of William and Polly McDaniel (both parents having same last name) and had been staying with her sister, Emeline McDaniel Newman in the Pleasant Valley community before their marriage.

Benjamine and Betsy Kirby had six children total. Two of their children married into the Wells families, another married into the Coomer family and daughter Kibby Ann Kirby married Joshua Lawrence Herring of the Sachse community.

1862
Thomas Newman, Jr. also died in 1862. Thomas had been living near the Black River in Wayne County, Missouri when his wife, Mary Sparks Newman died. Thomas, along with son Harmon Runnels Newman and daughter Elizabeth Newman, then loaded up their wagon, which was pulled by a double yoke of oxen, and headed west. They settled north of Rowlett in an area that would later be named Pleasant Valley.

1863
Martha J. Newman, the little thirteen month old granddaughter of Thomas Newman died the following year on December 18, 1863 and was buried along side her grandfather. Martha was the daughter of Harmon Runnels and Emeline McDaniel Newman.

1866
There would be no other burials for the next three years until Lee Coomer, native of Ropes County, North Carolina, died on December 5, 1866. Lee had married Miss Nancy Alameda Myers of Wythe County, Virginia. Their first two children were born in Virginia, but their next two were born in Kentucky. It is not known if Lee and Nancy Coomer were members of the 1854 wagon train. Lee and Nancy had nine children total with three of their daughters marrying into the Kirby family.

1867
Nancy Evaline Tucker died the following year on September 11, 1867. Nancy was the eleven year old daughter of another pioneer family. Her parents were Charles Masters and Keziah "Kibby" Kirby Tucker. Charles was native of England and Kibby was native of Monroe County, Kentucky.

1868
Jessie Kirby died the following year on March 28, 1868 at 46 years of age. Jessie was born in Virginia on April 5, 1822. He was also a son of Robert and Keziah McCoy Kirby.

1868
Infant Robert B. Kirby died that same year on September 7, 1868. He was the son of Andrew Barland and Sarah Ann Ballard Kirby. His father, a member of the 1854 wagon train, married Sarah Ann Ballard of Kaufman County, Texas in 1863. Kaufman is now known as Rockwall County.

1868
Infant Robert B. Kirby also died in 1868. He was the second of eight children born to Andrew Barland and Sarah Ann Ballard Kirby. The Ballard family having arrived in 1847 were some of the earliest pioneer families to settle near the Rowlett area. Andrew Barland Kirby was also a member of the 1854 wagon train.

1869
Samuel Compton died the following year on November 14, 1869. Samuel was born in North Carolina on November 3, 1809. He married Keziah "Kibby" Kirby (not to be confused with Keziah Kirby the wife of Charles Masters Tucker). Samuel and Kibby had eight children total and were also members of the 1854 wagon train.

1871 Thru 1900
Another fifty-five burials would take place in this historical cemetery between 1871 and 1900. Most all of these burials represented family members of the area's earliest pioneer families and their descendants.

Burials from 1857 thru 1900 are listed in this sketch due to the significance of their historical ties with the community's earliest history. Those burials are as follows:

COTTONWOOD CEMTERY

Texas Historic Cemetery Marker

The Cottonwood Cemetery is located at 2920 Whitely Road, in the northeastern corner of unincorporated Dallas County. The east end of the cemetery abuts Cotton-wood Creek. This cemetery is part of the J. C. Johnson Survey and the land was originally located in Mercers Colony. The first known burial at Cottonwood was in December of 1875 with John L. Sims, the twenty-four old son of Elisha and Elizabeth Turner Sims, being the first recorded interment. Both parents, one brother and one sister were also buried here.

There is no known documentation indicating the name of the person that donated the original land for this cemetery, but it is thought that Elisha Sims set aside this land since it was later conveyed by Emma Adalade Sims Spence, daughter of Elisha Sims. The first known documentation recording conveyance of the surrounding property was dated August 19, 1948, and specifically states "Save and Except that portion of said property used as cemetery."

The original land contained approximately 3/4 acre and consisted of all property directly in front of and west of the entrance gate. The newer section consist of all property east of the entrance gate. This section is slightly less than ½ acre and was donated by William E. and Jessie Rhea Hunter in 1973. Total acreage is now recorded at 1.19 acres.

There are approximately thirty unmarked graves in the old section. Many of the older unnamed graves were marked with bois d'arc stobs (small post) and almost all of those stobs have disappeared over the years. There are 201 marked graves in the combined sections. Many of the graves in the older section contain the remains of the first pioneers and early settlers of the Cottonwood Community.

All of the early graves were dug by members of the nearby communities. Fred Spainhouer, Clyde Raney, Hubert Raney, and Oscar Merritt were some of the frequent volunteers. George Nelson even made a special tool in his Liberty Grove blacksmith shop for evening up the sides.

Veterans from the Indian Wars, Mexican War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean Ware are buried in this historic cemetery.

There was no established program for the care and upkeep of the cemetery until 1958 when the Cottonwood Cemetery Foundation was formed. Carl Foster served as first president with Judge Dee Brown Walker as vice-president and Agnes Eaves served as secretary/treasurer. Current officers are Jim Foster, president; Judge Dee Brown Walker still serves as vice-president, Larry Murry, Second Vice President and Mary Beth Tyler now serves as secretary/treasurer.

PLEASANT VALLEY CEMETERY

The Pleasant Valley Cemetery is located on Merritt Road in northeast Dallas County, one-quarter mile north of Pleasant Valley Road. A concrete driveway divides the new part from the old part. The old portion consist of all property on the left-hand side (north) of the concrete drive and the new portion consist of all property on the right-hand side.

Merritt Road, which is now situated in front of the cemetery, was originally located at the back of the cemetery. This road served as the dividing line between Mercers Colony and the District of Nacogdoches during the Republic of Texas era.

This pioneer cemetery is positioned on approximately three acres of land which is part of the original W. D. Penny (sometimes spelled Perry) 320 acre survey.

Soledy J. Newman, the daughter of Harmon and Emeline McDaniel Newman, was the first person buried at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. She was born in a log cabin at Pleasant Valley on August 26, 1864, and died January 26. 1874. Her grave is located at the back of the cemetery near the concrete drive.(1)

There is no known deed for the old section of this cemetery. However, the obituary for David M. Compton, which was printed in the Garland News in 1950, reads as follows: "Burial was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery on the land which was donated for the cemetery by his father-in-law, the late Harmon Newman."

The newer portion, containing 1.4 acres, is located on the south side of the driveway and was purchased by the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association for $233 from Dr. George W. Newman on November 6, 1919.

A total of three different groups have organized to provide the cemetery's care and upkeep.
The first group, known a the Ladies Cemetery Association of Pleasant Valley, was officially organized September 7, 1916. Bula Finley served as Secretary with Belle Moorman serving as president.

Members of this same group reorganized and received Official Charter from the state of Texas on October 10, 1919 as the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association.

The third group was formed in 1975 with Judge Dee Brown Walker advising the organization. This organization was officially chartered as the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Foundation. Ray Boyd was elected president with Hubert Raney elected vice-president and Nora Pelton Sperling elected as secretary-treasurer.

Current officers of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Foundation are Jim Foster, president; Delbert Todd, vice-president, and Wanda Pelton Smith serving as secretary-treasurer.

The cemetery currently contains about 535 marked graves. Many of these graves contain the remains of the first pioneers and early settlers of the Pleasant Valley era. The total number of unmarked graves in this cemetery is not known.

Soldiers from the Civil War, and every major war since the Civil War, are also buried in this cemetery.(2) Other burials include numerous descendants of members from the 1854 wagon train which traveled from Monroe County Kentucky to the Pleasant Valley area.

There were three burials at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery on the same day in early January of 1919. All three victims died as a result of the dreaded 1918 Spanish Flue Epidemic.

A bronze memorial marker honoring all Pleasant Valley area pioneers, early settlers and our loved ones who are laid to rest there was dedicated in 1997. This memorial marker was donated by Ken and Wanda Pelton Smith. This bronze marker also honors Winnie Compton Pelton Mooney for dedicating her life to the care and upkeep of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

The Texas Historical Commission designated Pleasant Valley Cemetery as Historic Texas Cemetery on December 20, 2000.

1. Harmon Newman traveled to Pleasant Valley from Missouri in 1856 as recorded in Memorial Sketches & Biographical History of Dallas Co., Lewis Publishing, 1892, page 335.
2. First inventory found in Old Cemeteries of Dallas County by Willie Flowers Carlisle in 1948. Second inventory was by Dallas Genealogical Society in 1979. Third inventory found in Inscriptions Of Rowlett & Garland, Texas by Hazel Grisham Wade, 1998.

History Of Webb Chapel Cemetery
Dallas County, Texas
By Howard Joseph Cox
Isaac B. Webb and his wife, Mary (Hughes) Webb, were ardent Methodists. On May 5, 1845,the Webbs formed a Methodist society with five members including the Webbs. In the spring of 1846 the congregation was established, and a log house, eighteen feet square and covered with clapboards, was built within two hundred yards of the Webb cabin. The members gave it the name of Webb's Chapel where preaching, class meetings, and Sabbath school were held.

On January 27, 1847, Allis E. Webb, seven-year-old daughter of Mary and Isaac, died. She was the first person buried in the cemetery next to the Webb's Chapel. The name on her grave marker is Alice E. Webb.

On July 6, 1876, Isaac B. and Mary N. Webb conveyed approximately one-half acre of land adjoining the then-existing cemetery tract to William Caruth, William Harris, J.D. Douglas, D.R. McCullock, William P. Cochran and John S. Dickason, as Trustees, for the use and benefit of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The deed was recorded in Official Records of Dallas County, Texas, in Volume 51, Pages 139-140 on March 3, 1881.

About 1903, Webb Chapel Methodist Church moved from the land given by the Webbs to 2536 Valley View Lane in Farmers Branch and abandoned the cemetery tract. Sophronia Frances "Fronie" Ford, youngest daughter of Isaac B. and Mary Hughes Webb, looked after the cemetery. Fronie Ford owned the property directly to the south of the cemetery. Property on all sides of the cemetery was owned by heirs of Isaac B. Webb and Mary Hughes Webb.

April 22, 1955, Anne (Johnston) Ford (Mrs. Gus L. Ford) formally conveyed a strip of land off the north side of her property to The Webb Chapel Cemetery Association, confirming an earlier gift to the Cemetery Association in 1945 by her husband. This deed was recorded March 16, 1956, in Volume 4458, Page 74, Deed Records of Dallas County, Texas.

April 23, 2001, Howard J. Cox signed an AFFIDAVIT OF FACTS CONCERNING THE WEBB CHAPEL CEMETERY AND THE LAND CLAIMED BY THE WEBB CHAPEL CEMETERY ASSOCIATION FOR CEMETERY PURPOSE which was filed April 24, 2001, and was duly recorded in Volume 2001 080, Pages 6503-6508 of records of Dallas County, Texas.

HISTORY OF WEBB CHAPEL CEMETERY ASSOCIATION

June 20, 1915, several citizens of Dallas County, Texas, interested in the Webb's Chapel Cemetery, near Farmers Branch, Texas, held a meeting at the cemetery grounds with C.B. Gillespie acting as temporary chairman. Sophronia Frances Ford (Mrs. G.L. Ford) was unanimously elected as President.

July 4, 1915, CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS OF THE WEBB'S CHAPEL CEMETERY ASSOCIATION, written by G. "Gus" Ford, Jr., were adopted. Article II stated, "The purpose of the Association shall be to own, operate and maintain grounds for the burial of the dead." Regular meetings of the Association were held for which there are written minutes to 1925. There are no known written minutes of meetings of the Association from 1925 until 1938.

September 18, 1938, the Webb's Chapel Cemetery Association met in called session in the cemetery grounds for the purpose of reorganizing and making plans for future care of the grounds. Gus L. Ford was elected President. New CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS OF THE WEBB'S CHAPEL CEMETERY ASSOCIATION were adopted.

February 19, 1939, Trustees Gus L. Ford, Elizabeth Cox, Mary Winn, Nanelle (Ogden) Connell, Bula Brown, Mattie (Kennedy) Jackson, Leika (Dennis) Gravley, Bessie (Asbury) Dennis and Homer Dooley, proposed a five year plan to raise $2,500 to maintain the cemetery, put a permanent fence around the cemetery, build a wall at the northeast corner, install a water system and invest $1,500 in a permanent endowment for the cemetery. This written plan was mailed to the members March 1, 1939.

May 19, 1946, CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION SERVICE was followed by regular annual meeting of the Association.

May 18, 1947, Treasurer Connell reported $1,842.18 in bank accounts. A goal of $3,000.00 for the permanent endowment was agreed upon with the hope that the goal could be reached by May 1948,

President Gus L. Ford died after the 1947 meeting and before the 1948 meeting.

March 7, 1948, Trustees met and elected Anne (Taliaferro) McMillan (Mrs. J. W. McMillan) to fill the vacancy on the Board of Trustees. Elizabeth Cox was elected President.

May 16, 1948, Treasurer's report showed $2,413.40 on deposit.

May 20, 1951, Warren Gravely was elected President.

May 24, 1953, Howard J. Cox was elected President.

May 15, 1955, Treasurer Nanelle Connell reported that the endowment fund is now $3,067.43

April 16, 1963, Martha Elizabeth Cox died. Her will provided that her entire estate be used "to build a memorial to the Pioneers of this community, it being known as the "Chapel of Silence." It is further provided "subject to the approval of the Trustees of the Webb Chapel Cemetery Association, that this Chapel be located near the front gate of the Webb Chapel Cemetery and on the property of the cemetery so designated and donated by the Association."

May 19, 1963, the Association adopted a motion to recommend to the Board of Trustees not to accept the Chapel Building in the cemetery as designated in the Will of Martha Elizabeth Cox. The Trustees refused the Chapel Building on cemetery grounds by a majority vote. (The Chapel of Silence was accepted by Cochran Chapel United Methodist Church. It now stands on the corner of Midway Road and Northwest Highway.)

May 1972, Robert Brent "Pete" Holden was elected President.

May 20, 1979, Howard M. "Pete" Ford was elected President.

July 28, 1994, Elizabeth Ann Taliaferro McMillan died. September 7, 1994, James Wesley McMillan died. The two McMillan wills left the entire estate to Webb Chapel Cemetery Association. Heirs of James Wesley McMillan contested his will. The Trustees of Webb Chapel Cemetery and the McMillan heirs entered into a settlement agreement. The Association realized $153,680.36 after paying $14,831.47 legal and miscellaneous expenses.

May 19, 1996, Mark Asbury was elected President. June 6, 1998, Article I of the Constitution was amended to state, The name of this association shall be "The Webb Chapel Cemetery Association."
